How to use empirical methods to inspect rolling bearings

Some operators lack the experience in identifying rolling bearings and continue to use them as long as they see no obvious damage to the rolling bearings, causing serious failures later. Some people only need to remove the rolling bearings and replace them without inspection. Sometimes the bearings that can be used are also replaced. The technical condition of rolling bearings should be inspected on a dedicated inspection instrument, and a dial indicator can also be used to measure some data. But for the general operator, when these conditions are not met, a rough inspection can be carried out with empirical methods.

(1) Observation method. Observe the rolling bearing with naked eyes. The inner and outer raceways should have no traces of peeling and severe wear, and they should be in the shape of an arc groove; all the surfaces of the rolling elements should be free of spots, cracks and peeling; the cage should not be loose, damaged, or worn , The clearance with the rolling elements is not too large.

(2) Hand feel method. The clearance between the inner and outer races and the rolling elements of a normal bearing is 0.005 to 0.010 mm. For the rolling bearing that has been used for a stage, there should be no obvious noise when pinching the inner race with your fingers and shaking it axially.

(3) Rotation method. Clamp the inner race of the bearing with one hand and turn the outer race with the other. The bearing should be able to rotate flexibly and no radial shaking should be felt.

During the inspection, the above three empirical methods should be combined to facilitate the correct judgment of the technical status of the rolling bearing. For tapered roller bearings, it should also be observed whether the rolling element is located in the middle of the outer race, and if it moves forward, it should not exceed 1.5 mm.
