Cold pipe refrigeration system only half the power of the air conditioner

On August 19, according to foreign media reports, a new study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences demonstrated a new energy-saving refrigeration system that only needs half the electricity of the air conditioner.

The advent of air-conditioning allows people to spend the summer more comfortably, but it is extremely expensive. Therefore, a research team composed of scientists from many countries has developed a refrigeration system called "cold tube", which works by absorbing the heat emitted by the human body, so it only needs half the electricity of the air conditioner.

Adam Rysanek of the University of British Columbia explained: “The working principle of air conditioners is to use air to cool down and dehumidify, but this is not environmentally friendly. The working principle of'cold pipes' is to directly release radiation by absorbing human body radiation. Heat, so it will greatly save energy."

The system uses the principle of radiant cooling to inlay rectangular wall panels or ceilings with cold water. They are wrapped in a novel membrane that is airtight and can prevent moisture to avoid the formation of condensation.

At the same time, this film allows radiation to pass through, which means that when a person stands next to or under the panel, body heat will radiate to the cooled panel, creating a feeling of cooling without the need to dehumidify the air.

The system was tested in Singapore. 55 participants who were invited to participate said that although the temperature was 30°C at the time, most of them still felt very cool and comfortable.

Researchers said that the current cold tube design makes it a suitable solution for outdoor activities, such as summer fairs and concerts. In the next step, they will continue to develop the system so that it can replace traditional refrigeration systems such as air conditioners and widely used in home and office needs.
