What is a branch box
The branch box is actually an outdated refrigerant connection method. Most of the previous multi-line systems used the branch box to divide the refrigerant. It is actually a box for storing refrigerant. All indoor refrigerant pipes will be connected to this box. This branch box will be distributed according to the size of each indoor unit and the amount of refrigerant needed.
What is a branch pipe
The branch pipe is actually the central air-conditioning branch pipe, splitter, and splitter. As the name implies, it is actually a pipe with one input but with multiple output. It is mainly used in the pipeline installation of the central air-conditioning VRV system. Its role is to divert the refrigerant in this pipeline to the indoor unit in the central air-conditioning multi-line installation system, which can play a role of diversion.

1. Installation cost comparison
1. Branch pipe: the lowest cost. The use of branch pipes reduces the use of copper pipes and reduces the number of holes for indoor pipelines to penetrate the wall. The price of the branch pipe itself is low, but the welding itself requires welding equipment and some labor costs, and overall the cost is relatively low. (The cost of air conditioning installation in China is mainly in materials, which is completely different from Japan.)
2.Branch box: the highest cost. This is the flaw of the branch box. The price of a branch box is between 2000-3500 yuan. Other installation costs are not considered for the time being. The price of the branch box alone is equivalent to the price of an indoor unit, which is indeed a bit high. In addition, compared to the branch pipe, the length of the pipeline may be doubled.
2. Installation difficulty and beautiful appearance
1. Branch pipe: Welding work is required. Welding work requires a certain technical content, which is difficult to install. However, the overall appearance of the pipeline can be guaranteed due to the small amount of pipeline after the branch pipe is used. What needs to be grasped during the installation process is that the welding must be filled with nitrogen to prevent the copper pipe from producing oxide scale, and to prevent welding leakage.
3.Branch box: The branch box needs to find a location to install separately, and a larger space is needed to "wrap it", but it does not require welding, and the installation is not difficult. After the decoration is completed, there is a large inspection port (generally 500*500), which affects the appearance.
Three, effect and attenuation
1. Branch pipe: Under the premise of correct installation (for example, the branch pipe in the horizontal direction cannot be installed vertically), the use of branch pipe can ensure that the amount of refrigerant flowing to each indoor unit is relatively uniform, and the attenuation is small.
2.Branch box: Due to the unified placement of electronic expansion valves, it can ensure that the refrigerant flows more evenly, especially the output effect of the most terminal indoor unit. However, because the electronic expansion valve has a certain distance to reach the heat exchange of the indoor unit, the refrigerant after throttling will evaporate in advance, and there will be a certain attenuation, and the control accuracy will be affected.
Four, maintenance
1. Branch pipe: because it is welded by on-site installers, there may be hidden dangers of leakage. After installation, air tightness test is required. Generally, there will be no leakage problems after the pressure test is qualified. But there is always a risk.
3.Branch box: The branch box is manufactured by the manufacturer, so the internal welding quality is guaranteed. The connection between the outside and the refrigerant pipe is screwed up with a wide-bottomed nut (commonly known as: bell mouth beam connection), construction without welding. All the copper pipes are connected in only two places: the internal unit of the air conditioner and the location of the branch box. It is also more convenient to repair and find problems. However, once there is a problem inside the branch box, the current maintenance method is basically: replace it as a whole! (The failure point is the expansion valve, leakage, drainage, and electronic control).
Five, indoor unit noise
1. Branch pipe: Compared with the branch box, there is indeed noise, mainly because the electronic expansion valve is built into the indoor unit. When the opening of the expansion valve changes, there is a sound of refrigerant flowing (mainly because the indoor unit is not turned on for heating, which may involve the flow of refrigerant. Sound), but this sound is generally small and difficult to distinguish.
2. Branch box: Because the expansion valve is placed outside the branch box, the indoor unit has no electronic expansion valve, and the refrigerant flow sound does not exist. However, there will be noise in the place where the branch box is placed. Pay attention to the position when installing.
